Picking Up the Pieces of Autism

Welcome to momsonautism.com!
You most likely landed here because someone you know and love–a son, a daughter, a brother, a sister, a niece, nephew, cousin or friend’s child–has been diagnosed with Autism.
My friend, Lisa, and I are two Moms who have sons with Autism. As parents, we are always reminding ourselves how far Mateo and Darby have come and not to compare them to anyone but themselves. Through it all we have found the positive strength to cope with this frustrating disorder.
Momsonautism.com will be community that shares positive stories about Autism though posts and podcasts that relate our experiences with various therapies, programs and strategies. We welcome contributions and comments about your family and your experiences.
We hope this will be as “therapeutic” for you as it has been for Lisa and me putting it together (with a LOT of help from wonderful friends!).

Myra,
You and Lisa have put together an awesome site. I’m so proud of you both for being such wonderful Moms to your special little guys. Your radio interview this morning was great - even though I had to go to the garage & sit in the car to hear it. Couldn’t get that station on any of the 3 radios in the house.
Love ya, Mom
WOW!!! What an awesome site! Myra and Lisa you both are awesome! I can’t wait to check this site out again and see how its grown. Myra I really miss the boys, tell them hello for me. This is going to be a great sucess.

Hi Myra and Lisa,
Thanks for sharing this site with me. It’s wonderful, and it’s great to hear how you and your boys are doing!
It’s so true that our children CAN learn, but learn differently. Zachary can read simple books and can keep up with his 1st grade peers in math. But he does struggle with things that come so easily for typical children. So he works extra hard in those areas.
I’ll defintely keep reading here and sharing this site!

Lisa and Myra, this is so wonderful! I’m excited to listen to all the past podcasts when I get time and the future ones as well. You two are such amazing people and great moms. I feel fortunate to know you, and you can always count on me if you ever need a hand with anything! Great job, Ladies!

Hi, I found this site back in September of last year and its soo great to know you aren’t alone. I want to thank Myra for her support over those first few months of trying things and feeling like I wasn’t doing enough. My son, Ethan, who is 2.5 yrs old, was a happy kid but never really interacted with you, he also barely spoke and only ever played with cars. Now he is talking (still only single words for the most part), he does puzzles (not the interlocking kind yet), and is obsessed with letters and numbers (he always has had a strong interest in them). We have found this amazing program for kids on tv called Word World, he loves it. Everythig is made of letters and they build words all the time. Since Christmas (when he got 3 movies for the show), he has started to spell. He will take the letters from his puzzle and spell out words and then say them. He can also tell you the word when you spell it (of course, only if HE is in the mood), he has 21 words that he can spell, and everyday he is saying new words as well. I think that as long as you look at what your child is interested in and run with it ( autistic or not), you can see them do things that you never imagined. Thanks Myra and Lisa for creating this site and your podcast.
Thanks for the sweet comments and I am so glad to hear how well Ethan is doing! They are amazing kids! NEVER underestimate what they can do because they will surprise you EVERY time!!
